Spirtos, Bobby McGee

Sailed the Transpac back in the 80's in approximately 13 days with many hours of 13 - 16 knot surfing large swells but averaged out for the race about 7 knots, a chute exist with crew comments on it.  She was reinforced for long surfing and pounding - mast step and rudder rebuilt.

After the Transpac she was shipped to Annapolis and was sold to the National Federation of the Blind.  She was outfitted for a blind person to race across the Atlantic single-handed - apparently legally blind but could see peripherally.  Large screen nav equipment below - everything to the cockpit - real simple and a ton of copper sheet in the bilge for grounding short wave.  The second day out she was hit by lightening and started to take on water, he could not find the leak. He was towed back to Annapolis and the leak was found in the stuffing box. The deal was upon completion of the Atlantic single-handed race the boat would be his.  National Federation of the Blind said he did not finish and there was a law suit - the Federation won and she was auctioned off to a guy in Tampa.
