Blue Star is National Champ

I will say it was a wonderful weekend of sailing in Long Beach.
Day 1: Solid westerly breeze and flat water allowed for some great sailing. Many tactical decisions on which side of the course would prevail and how best to avoid the large commercial traffic. For many it was the first day sailing in awhile so there were some great mix-ups in the standings. The last race of the day saw everyone go to their #3, except us as we felt the #2 was still a solid choice. Blue Star dominated the fleet, but there were some close calls with Intense. Overall a well sailed day.
Day 2: SW filling to a decent W in some swell allowed for a little surfing but mostly hard concentration on boat speed upwind and down. Again great sailing by all and tactics paid bunches here. Going from 9th to 2nd in one beat was a reality. Again Blue Star took the podium but with three 2nd place finishes White Lightning made a major come back. Again all the competitors sailed spectacular races and made the most of the beautiful conditions.
Day 3: S to SSW winds poked their ugly heads and resulted in very tricky and very shifty conditions with 20-40 degree shifts in a matter of minutes. This allowed for some great tactical “rolling the dice” and resulted in a mix up in the top of the fleet. For the first time in the regatta there was another boat on the podium, fellow DPYC sailors on Grey Goose. With all the shifts and light winds keeping a clear head and making good calls paid dividends.
I want to thank ABYC for running a wonderful regatta. Everyone from R/C to the bar staff were superb and really showed what OD racing is all about. To all the sailors that came out and enjoyed the great conditions I look forward to seeing you next year in Long Beach for the 2012 O30 Nationals. And finally I would like to say to all the owners that came to the annual owners meeting, I sure hope you know what you’re in for electing me you new class president.
I look forward to serving you next year and I encourage all of the O30 owners out there to plan on making the trip next year. Long Beach is a great venue with wind and great R/C. I believe our friend from Hawaii, Jim Saylor, would agree. See you all next year, oh and KEGS on the dock :).
