Let’s start a topic for the 2019 Championships, August 2-4, in Oakville, Ontario. Event page:

Registration page below, as well this links to the LYRA 2019 regatta website. For people traveling to Oakville/Toronto, there is info on accommodations and things to do in the area.

As of February 16 we have 4 registered boats, which is fantastic considering we’re not even into March yet. From the point of view of on water activities, there is not much to worry about for our fleet. We will have one of the best PRO’s on Lake Ontario Ross Cameron, a fantastic Chief Judge Richard Sullivan from Rochester, NY and the best RC’s from western Lake Ontario. We can work with the OA to create the course for the Saturday Long Distance Race which will be detailed in the SI’s.

We have a tremendous grand prize donated jointly by Ullman Sails Cleveland and the Olson 30 Class Association, an Ullman Sport Carbon GPL Tri Radial mainsail!

What our focus now should be are two things: Charter boats for visiting crews, and On Shore activities. The idea with this event is to bring as many crews from other locales to join us in Oakville, to make this a truly North American event. It order for this to work we need charter boats (as well as crews to travel). So if there are any Olson 30 owners on Lake Ontario who are sure they will not be racing but who are willing to let their boat be chartered, let’s get the conversations started.

For On Shore activities – there will be plenty of LYRA activities planned, parties every evening, rummers, great music. But we should plan at least one specific Olson 30 event. We have some time to put this together.

Lastly – for Lake Ontario and other boats, you should consider participating in some of the racing other than the Olson 30 event. There are plenty of options for how you can do this. For example boats that might be trailering from various points would have lots of options to join a feeder race, for example from Whitby, ON, or Toronto, or Youngstown, NY. Arriving in Oakville in time to do the Freeman Cup is a great option also – there are two Freeman races, Long and Short, on Wednesday July 31. Thursday is a lay day and opening ceremonies for LYRA.

    See you on the line!

There’s a reasonable chance my “other” boat will be available for charter. If interested, the charterer would have to get the boat from Greenwich CT to Oakville (around 8 hours) and pay to have the trailer serviced.

Great to have that option Jonathan. And we noticed that you’re registered, that’s fantastic – we very much look forward to you coming this year!
