    Anyone have any Kg’s for stays for the Olson? I bought a Harken Rig Tune Pro which is all metric. They have a conversion from a Loos…but I think it is for wire. I’m checking on that. Our rod is “-4” .172 diam for the record.

    The rig tune pro is good to about 1100 lbs. On my single spreader I am running close to 1000 lbs on the uppers and about 700 on the lowers. If you have a double spreader you can get away with slightly less as the rig is less prone to falling off in heavy air. I find the Loos gauge to be a better deal just because it can go higher so you aren’t as close to the max load possible.

    Thanks Jason…I reduced back down to 600 kg or so when I saw that Harken instructions said no more than 500 Kg. The battery was getting low, so maybe I was getting a false read because now I have some slack in the leewards. 1000 lbs is 450 kg I think. Something isn’t right..I’ll hope it is the battery! If not..back to Ebay it goes! May be that it is only good for wire, although it says ok with rod.

    I have a different take. I keep my lowers tighter than the uppers. Using the Loos, I run about 1000# on the lowers and about 800# on the uppers.

    Interesting idea Al. What is your reasoning behind a loose upper tight lower? I am assuming this is on a single spreader rig.

    Yes. Single spreader. Well, I guess it’s just the way I’ve always done it. I really don’t mean for the uppers to be loose. I just want the lowers tighter than the uppers. Intuitively, it’s like stacking up legos. You make the bottom part broad and sound, then you put things on top of it. If you do the reverse, it’s unstable. The uppers are depending on the spreaders to stay in place when the load is on the rig. A little displacement of the lowers, which are short, translates to a big displacement of the spreaders and a bigger displacement of the uppers. I don’t know how else to explain my view, but you might take a look at some big boats. I think you will see that the lowers have larger diameter rods than the uppers. This is for the same reason I’m pointing out, namely that you want the spreader firmly fixed in place to make the uppers effective.
    Just an opinion. I’m wrong a fair amount of the time and I might be about this.

    PS: to all…I have a “true” double spreader rig from Ballenger on my boat. I’m thinking of boosting the Kg’s to 650kg to get rid of some slack in leewards. Lowers are tighter.
