Hi all my first post here.

I’m about to buy what I believe is the only Olson 30 in Europe based in Ireland. Anyopne know of another based in Europe as I would like to talk to the owner.

I’m trying to get some idea of how it will perform under IRC.

If anyone has any info or results of large regattas where a O30 did well please let me know or supply a link. Would love to see how it does again J 109 J35 J80, half tonners and Elan/corby designs.

Also how well does the Olson perform to its polars?

In my opinion if it meets its polars then its could well be a great IRC boat.

    Any advise much appreciated.

In Ontario there is a lot of racing under PHRF and the Olson 30 does pretty well. LYRA is an organization of clubs from all over the lake and an Olson 30 was recently Boat of the Year, co-winner with a J30. This year’s winner was a J35.

You may have to do some digging but i think you’ll find some useful data in the results for the Youngstown Levels. 2013 was the last year they were held but you could go back a few years on Yacht Scoring. In 2013 an Olson 30 won their PHRF class:

In 2012 an Olson 30 was second in the Lake Ontario 300:

in a lot of these races the boats are not speedy IRC boats, they are cruiser-racers, for what that’s worth.

this regatta results page had lots of good data:

    http://www.cycseattle.org/archive/2006_specific/centerirc.html

i found records of IRC ratings between 0.974-0.983 for Olson 30’s

SWG thank you for the info great links.

Funny you should say that the boat were not speedy IRC racers ..believe it or not in our experience cruiser racer types rate so well on IRC they usually win all major regattas… IRC was never designed to be friendly to racing boats with light weight and large sail areas. Most European IRC boats are very cruiser orientated for example John Corby designs.

Antoine thank you for the response.

Can you give me some info on how you get on racing in France?

DO you have an IRC rating?

DO you have link to results where you raced so I can see what type of boats you beat etc.

What type of boast are in your club or competitions you raced against.

Sorry for asking so many questions

On Lake Ontario there’s currently a healthy discussion around PHRF vs. IRC. near as i can tell, most, if not all regattas support both rating systems. The organizations who favour one over the other seem to be promoting (gently?) one or the other. for example one of the main local series is LORC (Lake Ontario Racing Council) are pushing IRC yet they still have PHRF classes at their regattas.

For someone like me who is relatively new to sailboat racing (outside of wednesday club stuff) it’s pretty confusing.

the boat you are about to purchase in irland is mighty expensive isn’t it? i kind of remember seeing some classified about her. if it is not her then there are two of them in irland. i use to live in the states, in sag harbor eastern long island in the hamptons where i purchase the boat long ago i raced the boat phrf class for many years 3 years ago i moved to france i had the boat cargo over last year. she has n t seen the water yet, she is under a total refit, i ll post pix later. i intend to race her again possibly starting this spring but i am not sure of the program yet

SWG do you have an y info on just how well the IRC rated olsons are performing against the other boats under IRC.

I have done a lot of research on polars etc of similar boats that would race the Olson in a IRC mixed fleet class and I really believe the Olson may be an IRC bandit… just no one has noticed it yet as IRC is so under utilised in the US/Canada.

Antoine I have already hammered the price down considerably. There is only 1 in Ireland and yours in France makes 2 in all of Europe from what I can see. No sign of another from all my research. Would really like to see your refit pictures.

DO you have a link to the club you will race in…was going to check the other boats in your fleet polars to see how the Olson looks against them.
