Sealing stanchions

I’ve got the old classic rust stain problem from water accumulating in the stanchion pockets, and wondering if anyone has a longer-lasting method to effectively keep water out of there. I had replaced my stanchions with new Garhauer versions, then attempted sealing them with silicone, but the acetate in the silicone (I think) aggravated more stainless corrosion and didn’t do a great job keeping water out- if anything, it may have helped seal water in. Is it best to do nothing, and just keep cleaning them out? Or should I use the non-acetate silicone and do a more complete job sealing them off??

Hi Ray,
Spread LanoCote on them ~ that will keep the air and moisture out. It is available at most chandleries. Beware, it is very sticky and dogs love it – which is one way of getting it off of yourself or anything you didn’t want it to be on. If you heat it up a bit you can spread it on with a brush. Careful though, it has a low melting point.Thanks- hadn’t thought of that!
What I did was seal the bottom of the stanchiosn with a 1-2″ plug of epoxy. It’s worked great with no rust stains. i also inserted a piece of 1/2″ steel pipe inside the stanchion to strengthen it.

Nawiliwili YC, KauaiWhat’s the best stuff to get the rust stains off the hull with. I have the same problem. FSR? Anything else?
Marykate On & Off hull and bottom cleaner. Be careful, though- that stuff is a mixture of acids (HCl, phosphoric and oxalic) and is extremely caustic. Fiberglass and gelcoat safe, though.. It’s so effective that all I was eventually doing is lightly soaking a rag and it easily wipes the stains off.
A mild solution of Muriatic acid on a rag. Us gloves and rinse well. Also cleans up rust stains on stainless around the boat.
