Has anyone modified the halyard exits? The mast is down and I’m getting new standing rigging. I’ve never been happy with the original setup and was wondering if anyone has done anything like adding bails or something like that.

Never heard of anything like that Javier. If you do anything, document and send to the webmaster, we’re always looking for interesting ideas to share.

What specifically would you be trying to accomplish with mods to the exits? Are you trying to lead the halyards more effectively or smoothly?

That’s exactly what I was thinking. I was wondering if any PacCup participants were concerned about chafe and if they had done anything about it. My rigger suggested adding a top plate with a couple spinnaker bales and external halyards, but i don’t like that idea.

I personally have never seen any issue with spinnaker halyards chafing or not running well, but maybe others have. I can’t imagine why you’d want to run external halyards, that makes very little sense to me. One thing to look at are the sheaves, they were originally designed for wire-rope halyards and could be an issue if you are running straight high tech line if they haven’t been modified or replaced. Photos show some original O30 masthead sheaves that were modified to work with modern line.
