Strop or slug in mainsail clew

Do people use a strop around the boom for their mainsail clew attachment? our boat has two kinds of mainsails, some have a slug, some need a strop around the boom.
how does the strop work with the tapered boom end when using outhaul in and back out? also, do people with the slug also use the boom sock for spinnaker pole or does the slugged main prevent using the sock?

On Fast Company we went to a velcro stap and the outhaul works fine. Gave up the spin pole boom bag. We find that it stays clear when left on deck w/ the mast end attached. Quicker sets and drops. We rarely us our fore guys any more as they just got in the way. We have a short tail on the bridle if we need to attach fore guy.
thanks. i just made a mockup strap using some HD adhesive velcro attached to itself, i will give it a try today and make something with webbing inside to suit.
some people seem to swear by the boom bag, but we’re not even used to flying spinnakers yet so it’s all new.

Spar Wars is Velcro. 3 layers is plenty. It doesn’t go out to the taper, that is in the paint where the clew can’t go under full outhaul.
We use a boom bag. BUT, we have a carbon pole with center D rings for the lift and downhaul (no bridle). We use twings that are just aft of the chain plates on the toe rail.
the strap worked well this afternoon. i’d rather it be some strong webbing with velcro sewn to it but the HD velcro stuck to itself worked fine. the loop part of the velcro slides great on the boom. the taper doesn’t hurt it working at all.
I am new to the class and might change my mind later but don’t like strops for securing the clew – non-uniform tie downs and too much work attaching and detaching. We have a slug in the sail track (old style boom) attached semi-permanently to the main outhaul clevis which then holds the main down to the boom and out as desired.
You don’t have to undo the Velcro. It slides off the end when you remove the sail.
We have both kinds of mainsails, slug and no slug – needs a strop. Both work fine.
