Toronto would be okay if in mid/late August. Still think the Detroit NOOD’s offer the best venue for all. Early June. It is not that far for Kingston boats and about midway for me as well.

Two subjects here, so I’ll start a separate forum for the PH/Mac Race.

For the NA..estimated dates for this event? If we do the PH/Mac…take out July for the NA’s.

Report: Caught a Thursday Night race on Fast Company while in Kauai. Thanks to Jim Saylor! They have 4 Olsons, several almost level rated boats and a very beautiful island paradise! We managed to help post a bullet for Jim, so we didn’t hinder him much! Good time and great club!

Gin pole…I had one for my J/24, but never considered one for the O30. How tall is it?

I’m in for the shore course; then Ugotta Regatta in Harbor Springs (LTYC.org)> I can arrange the OD for Thur/Fri. Then we do the Saturday 25 mile race. We can leave Sunday out of the O30 series, but the hard core can continue for the Ugotta Series. I like the idea of no raft for the shore course. The EPIRB can be the PL style as long as it transmits GPS locations as well as the EPIRB signal. Chris, what kind of launching available at Port Huron?

To repeat: Ugotta runs OD racing on Thursday and Friday before the weekend event. Last year the OD’s were J/111 and Great Lakes 70’s. They set a shorter course for the J/111’s, so we could use that length. It is TOT/Lake Michigan PHRF handicap. OB’s would be 105 and I’m 108 with IB.

My experience is that you deliver your boat to the next venue on Wednesday (too pooped on Tuesday) So Thursday and Friday at Ugotta would be my first choice. (PH Sat, Sun, Mon. Tues off, Wed deliver, Race Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun.)

I might be able to motivate my club (my son is the RC) to accomodate us on Lake Charlevoix. Add 20 miles by water from Mackinac. Lake Charlevoix would be a great venue..flatter water, shifty..a true test bed. We could schedule them mid week after the Mac. Those that wanted to go back up to Ugotta could by the weekend for an extended race experience. It would be worth it! Port Huron to NW Michigan is not that far (150 miles?) once you are rolling, it is an easy trip. “Up North” traffic is nothing. Boyne City offers a close by State Park for camping. It has a great beach and warm water for the families. (Young State Park) We have a YC owner of a marina facility that could make retrieval deals, I’m sure. (travel hoist)

Chris…take a look at your ORR rating. Add ten points to it and look at section 7 in 2012. I was giving time (.863) to 87 PHRF boats. Let’s do PH!

Old School…glad you asked. YES..there is a regatta in Harbor Springs the next weekend that caters to Mac racers. On Saturday they do a 23 mile course and on Sunday they do windward/leewards. (Ugotta Regatta http://www.ltyc.org) Little Traverse Bay is about 50 miles by water from Mackinac Island. Your road gang could bring trailers there instead of Mackinac. Irish Boat Shop has a travel hoist. There is a deep water ramp, but depths are down.
They run OD races on Thursday and Friday. Could be a perfect venue. Great free party on Friday night.

I’m in for Port Huron. I can’t beat the ORR game, so I’m all for the PHRF fleet with a bunch of O30’s in it. That way my IB will get 3 seconds from you OB’s! Shore course with no raft..why not! I’m pretty sure Opus Dei would enter. Let’s check out raft rentals before we write off the Cove Island course.

ORR has a stability minimum and Chicago adopted it. Bay View is using PHRF..no stability index. Olson’s are approved. ORR outboard Olson’s automatically pass the stability via sistership measurements. The ORR handicap is not Olson ‘friendly’…Port Huron is the better bet for Olson’s.

Defender has the double burner 3000 in the 2012 catalog. There is a Cookmate that is similar. I have the original stove and no tracks! I got some ronstan tracks that kinda work. Wanna sell yours?

Yeah..I know. ChiMac doesn’t mandate them, but uses ORR for rating..which is not friendly to O30’s.

rental or borrow is the way to go.

Forgot to add…could have ‘our race’ within the PHRF fleet as NA and take iron from the Mac as well.

Detroit NOODS…everyone has to travel..launching is free. OR how about using the Port Huron to Mackinac as a long distance test? Half the course is Canadian.. :)

They are using PHRF in the Mac. Offshore equipment is 2 and a liferaft. If we get 7, we could probably get a scratch OD fleet.

carbon in lake michigan phrf is a three second penalty. Keep in mind, the new carbon spars are STIFFER! Ask a J/111 owner.

Fix your mast step first..double it up. It will spread the compression across the boat more AND maybe lesser shroud settings because the step is not flexing.

By measurement, ORR, the outboard is already more stable than the IB. In hindsight, I should have taken a chunk of lead from the middle section of the keel and moved it to the bottom. No displacement change and gain 3″ of draft. No PHRF penalty so far for my keel mod. ORR might have given me some, but no more than an outboard rating, so it was ok.

That’s better on the bottom exits of the green lines. Still looks like you could take out the toggle. That would give a few more inches.

You have the same setup I have. You have the triple blocks wrong. The exits should be at the deck. I don’t have the center deck attachment. My lines terminate at the two backstay plates.

How is your helm? Balanced or have to tug much? If you are tugging much, then yes..shorten the forestay until you are only getting a slight pull on the tiller at 15 degrees helm. If you are pretty balanced..shorten the backstay. Take out that long toggle. That will give you more travel. You don’t need a turnbuckle either! That is a remnant of an old wire setup. Just adjust your rope lengths.

Lilya…I agree. Jockstraps though? I think it could be worse!

Would the class have issue with a SS rod from the deck to a keel bolt? I don’t race class, so I may go there. Currently I have a turnbuckle from the deck to the front of the mast. I keep it pretty tight. I will be adding some extra tension for a regatta in a week.

John Kerry keeps his boat in R.I. to avoid Mass. taxes. Then you can!

In my opinion..jock straps without a BOD could actually make the problem WORSE. Think about a bow and arrow.

The best fix would be a SS Rod from deck to keel (or to a SS mast base plate). Most modern boats have this. If the deck can’t rise..the sides can’t come in. Our toe rails are strong.

I know on my boat that I cannot install my ladder pins when it is on my trailer sitting on the keel. Once in the water, pins go in easily. To me, that means the bottom of the boat has a tiny bit of flex. That means your mast compression can push the keel down further. A rod would prevent some of that.

Tuesday night I made an adjustment. I don’t want forward rake, so I put on about 15% of backstay and went up to the forestay and tightened it until I had only a couple of inches of deflection. I expected that I might get some lee helm, but I didn’t. 8-13 true kts of wind, #1 and still had a nice minor angle of helm. Jacked on the backstay and YAHOOOO…. a pretty darn straight forestay. Out ran a Tripp 33 scratch that beat me with hcp last week, so the boat was fast.

Flex boat? My cabinets say that is spoof. My new mast step is probably the real cure.

Maybe it is my ‘left over’ J/24 tuning that was my issue. If others don’t know, the J/24 sails with a bunch of sag up to medium wind. I mean negative Loos gauge on the forestay by two fingers. I removed a toggle in my forestay..about 2″, so this was my concern with tuning without it. All seems fine now.

I didn’t max out the backstay Tuesday, so I feel I’m now set for 20+ kts apparent with no issues.

Do you have a below deck attachment of the mast to the bottom of the deck? Make sure that is tight. If you don’t have one…get one.

register it in a different state. I don’t even know what ‘property taxes’ are on a boat.

We pay sales tax at time of purchase (6%) and 3 year registration cost of about $105. That’s it. Michigan.

No wonder so many CA people are leaving.

But back to the answer…a boat (without sails?, motor?, trailer?) is worth $10k, in my opinion, if it is in good condition, not excellent. Sails, motor & trailer in average condition adds $6k.
