I have confirmed that the OYC hoist will handle the Olson 30’s. They are planning on setting up a temporary gin pole system for masts. They host a number of J24 regattas, and have ground logistics figured out.
Feeder Races:
The Founder’s Cup (sponsored by The Fitzgibbons Insurance Agency) will start at Henderson Harbor YC July 31st. Contact Caanan Leonard at 315-767-2122 to make docking arrangements. The Centennial Cup (sponsored by SUNY Oswego) will start at the Rochester YC July 31st. Call 585-342-5511 to make docking arrangements.
Long Distance Race:
The Freeman Cup (sponsored by The Steele Law Firm) will start at the Oswego Yacht Club August 1st. Contact Jim Enwright at 315-236-3270 to make docking arrangements. There will be three days of course racing for all one design and PHRF boats except the IRC fleet which is planning on two days. Three race courses are planned.
I am 90% sure Old School will be doing the 300.
The 300 is two weeks before the NA’s, one week after EYC @ Collins Bay, and is followed by Youngstown Levels, so it would definitely make it worth while for travelling boats to make the trip. A month of consecutive events, making two complete circumnavigations of Lake Ontario. If travellers need help delivering their boats between events, I am pretty sure we can rustle up some volunteers.
Next question…if we get a number of boats interested in the 300, should it be contested in class trim, or open it up to assy’s? So long as the sails do not affect the PHRF rating of 108, I would not be opposed to using them.
(note…Old School will most likely NOT be at levels).
EYC @ Collins Bay YC – July 12-14
LO300 @ Port Credit – July 21-23
Youngstown Levels July 28-29
NA’s @ Oswego – Aug 1-5For those of you who are interested, here is the link to the results:
And the winner is……..,LYRA!!!
See you all in August!Three days left. Get your ballots in.
Ten ballots in.
Good job everyone. Eleven hours and a third of the ballots are cast.

I have sent out ballots to the following boats. If you have not received the ballot, check your spam or drop me a line. If your boat is not listed and you would like to vote, please send me an email requesting a ballot.

http://www.ballengerspars.com/Date I have for Hamilton is June 21-24. I suggested that they try to find a later date.
As of right now, I have a relatively “official” proposal from Royal Hamilton Yacht Club on Lake Ontario, then somewhat less official expressions of interest from Oswego, Raritan, Screwpile and now Rush Creek (Feb 10 dudes….). If everyone involved with these groups could please put together approximate logistic and entry costs I will put together the lot and present it in one document.
Last year, for the vote, I arranged for a single-ballot run-off system. Personally, I think it worked out pretty well all around. Should we stick with this, or have a preliminary vote for which region will host, then a final vote on the regatta?
Historically, the NA’s have been a four day event, with one distance race plus three days of course racing, up to five races a day. Can Raritan accommodate this?
@ Jiri: When the NAC was originally created, it was decided that the Nat’s and the NA’s were always to be contested on opposite sides of the Rockies. The intention was for the regattas to flip back and forth annually, but that obviously has not happened. Not saying it will not happen, though. Perhaps next year, as you suggest.
Okay everyone…it is time to do some serious discussion about the NA’s. Glenn Freeman et al from Western Lake Ontario are very interested in hosting, as is Gary Gochal in New Jersey. We are always interested in Kingston. LYRA in Oswego would be a great event as well.
Lets get some real discussion going. I am going to set a completely arbirary deadline of February 10, 2012 for site bids. You all have my email address. Then, if there is more than one that is attractive, I will set up another online vote to decide when and where it is.
Ours is simply marine ply with good marine-grade glue, many clamps.
No jockstraps. I am considering adding a version of straps this spring, even though I am not completely convinced they are required.
# Al…no, the attachment is only on the aft side, as you see. The beam is about 2 inches thick.
#Bruce…not planning on selling them…much for the same reason you want them! What did you do on previous mac’s?
Here is mine. It is vertically laminated ply….forget what wood it is. Pretty easy to make, even with the curve. We lash the middle to the mast. It definitely does stiffen up the boat! Notice the lightning holes…gucci!

Does it have the stock Bomar forward hatch, or a lewmar?
NO BAGS???? You guys are crazy. Your forepeak must be a total mess during upwind work, and chaotic if a spin change has to occur. I would be very concerned about a loose piece of gear getting caught in the spin while it was below deck and subsequently jettisoned, or having the chute catch on something below and tear. I store my motor immediately in front of the mast, so it would be in perfect position to catch the chute
I have two different bags that we use. The one that works best is square mouthed, sunbrella sides and mesh bottom. Plastic clips are attached at the corners to a 3/16 line that is threaded into sleeves at the top of the bag. It is deep enough that it just touches the vbirth.
The second bag is rectangular. It is actually meant for use on the rail, but does fit in the hatch as well. It is not quite deep enough to be as effective as the other one. If we are doing a peel, this one goes on the rail then the old chute is stuffed into the good bag, and the rectangular bag then serves as a hatch bag.
We always leave sheets attached, but detach halyard. Bag keeps head at top, so no worries about losing it.
On my single spreader Ballenger, I do not remember any rivets when I removed the conduit. It was tough to get started. IIRC, I drilled a couple of holes in the bottom end to loop a small line through so I could grab on. Once it broke loose of the corrosion / grime / whatever, it came out without much issue.
I do run a masthead VHF early in the season, before the big regattas. Coax just run up bare. Once the regattas start, I just rip it out. I have not had an issue with this. However, this might not be the case if you have light wiring as well as coax.
Hmmm…want to remove the conduit but add furling?
I should have included the text for the mast weighing so people don’t have to go searching for it:
i) The mast shall be weighed at the center of gravity and shall weigh no less than 128 pounds. The center of gravity shall be no closer than 19 feet, 3 inches from the base of the mast.
I don’t have anything covering my dux backstay. It is showing a very minimal amount of chafe at the top batten after two years of use. Not nearly enough to be concerned about in my opinion.
