I went to Ballenger too. Buzz is great and knows the boat well.

It would worry me. The prob. w/ rod is there is no warning before it lets go. Seems most of the problems are found up top where the fittings exit the mast.

On Fast Company I removed all the cascade and plates from the boat. To much windage. Replaced the wire w/ 1/4″ Amsteel. I have a single block fixed to this about 6′ off the deck. From there it splits, through the deck on each side to cheek blocks low on the inside of the transom, back up to stand up blocks on inside of the transom, then forward with 3×1 to 6×1 and the control lines exit just aft of the traveler on each side. It is about 48×1 purchase. If there is interest I’ll take some photo’s

    Ray,

The Track you refer to is a head foil prob. a “Tuff luff”. First thing is to get that sag out of your head-stay. The rig should be set up fairly tight. Is it a single or double spreader rig? Rod or wire?

    Lilya,

Looking forward to your trip to Kauai. We have three Olson 30s here, all w/ double spreader rigs. Great boat for the single handed TP.
    How can I contact you?

    Jonathan,
Hind sight I would have added fiberglass to the laminate or carbon fiber.
Again if I remember I’ll get photo’s of ours.

I didn’t get photos, sorry. Fast Company’s beam follows the cabin top w/ about a 1″ gap above and is laminated 1/4″ marine ply X 5. We also have it held down in the center w/ “amsteel” to mast step. The shape gives good head room and the amsteel prevents any upward bend. I thing the jock straps help a lot. We like our rig very stiff and this setup allows this w/o hull deformation.

What a great group! I’m not sure where I heard no fiber stays??? Might have made it up…Our 1/4″ Amsteel blue has held up great and shows minimal wear at the top batten point. It’s been up for 2.5 years and I’ll probably replace it next year, just to be on the safe side. We’ve never had a baby stay either.

Yes, but only for the backstay.

The reason for the paint thinner is to remove the wax. The acetone or lacquer thinner should remove any paint thinner residue.

    Curt,
A bit scary having a cracked rudder post. I’d cut the crack w/ a multi-tool, clean w/ paint thinner for wax removal then lacquer thinner, then vacuum bag w/ chop fiber and epoxy.

    Al,

Nice polish. Tell me that is not a small crack at the bend point.

Replaced Fast Company’s bearings a couple years ago and the new ones were tight. Used a 2″ hole saw, put the saw shaft through bearing attached to drill, powered up and drew the saw backward through the bearing. Worked great! Quick, easy and true. no highs or lows from sanding.

    Jason,

    I’ll try to get photo’s.
We split the backstay w/ a block 6′ from deck, ran split through deck just ahead of transom to large cheek blocks on inside lower transom, up to standoff blocks half way up transom. from there I added a 3-1 purchase toward/along side of cockpit (below/inside) to which I added a 5-1 that exits cockpit wall just aft of Traveler. Easy. I’ll work on photos.

Fast Company used 1/4 amsteel blue w/ Closed thimbles & no turnbuckles. We also lead all the purchases below deck and it exits just aft of the traveler on each side (48-1).

Thanks gang. We do have bridles, though blowing the topping lift and foreguy will allow them to slide into the bag w/o any problems. I don’t like the extra weight up high etc. but I think the saving in time and foredeck mess will out weight this.

    Al,

I know those graphix. I chartered Run Wild this summer fro the Long Beach Nationals. Great boat! She had been on the hard for a few years in Oxnard. Put some new rod and our Kauai sails (Fast Company) and had a good time. I need more work in that light flat water.

Upwind when it blows we need no vang. Travel down sheet hard. If you do vang in heavier air you put huge load on the vang when you sheet out to fall off. What are people using for the lower vang attachment? We have a boom kicker too.

I think a crew wanted/crew available list would be most helpful. One of the holdups to racing is finding crew. One thought would be to check local collage sailing programs. Well coached young people who probably spend more time on the water than most of us do.

Look at Pride Marines mast step plate with tangs for a picture of Fast Company’s repair.

We did not glass it in place. Just epoxy bogg and screws. Three years in Hawaii so far w/o any issues and we do tend to push it out here.
